Docs: Expected languages

You can configure which languages you expect messages to be written in.

  • This helps Letterbox's spam detection avoid penalising legitimate messages in non-English languages.
  • Without this setting, messages in certain languages may receive a higher spam score.
  • Setting expected languages lets Letterbox know those languages are normal for your form.
How it works
  • Letterbox analyses the language of each incoming message.
  • If the detected language matches one of your expected languages, no language penalty is applied.
  • If the language does not match, the message may receive a higher spam score.
Language format
  • Languages are specified as ISO 639-1 codes (two lowercase letters).
  • For example: en for English, es for Spanish, fr for French, de for German.
  • Multiple languages can be specified as a comma-separated list, e.g. en,es,fr.
  • Use the special value any to accept all languages and disable language-based spam scoring.
Restrictions
  • A maximum of 10 languages can be specified.
  • Codes must be valid ISO 639-1 language codes.
Configure expected languages
  • In your profile, under a contact form, find the expected languages setting.
  • Enter your expected language codes separated by commas, or enter "any" to accept all.
  • Save the changes. The language setting takes effect for new messages immediately.
